Greensleeves Lesson Eight

Concert Variations

The Greensleeves Concert Variations is a two-and-a-half chorus medley performance made up of arrangement textures from the simplest to the most complex.

Here is the performance video.

The music is in your download folder.

The sections explained

Here is the performance again with a commentary on the accompaniment patterns and which lessons they are taught in.

Here is the scrolling MS performance in a separate window for your convenience.

Listening is something that all musicians should aim to be good at, so listen to the Concert Variations a few times, pointing out to yourself the main attractions like a tour guide, and, even if you don't immediately use them yourself, listen out out for these features in other music.

Postscript

That's the end of the Musicarta Greensleeves lesson series material.

Hopefully, it won't be the end of your explorations. I hope you'll feel able to sit down and let some variations and innovations creep into your Greensleeves arrangement. That's why 'creative' is in the title of the course!

If you haven't been able to master all the versions presented in the course, don't make it a rod to beat your own back.

It can happen with music that what you can't play takes on more importance than it should, and stops you enjoying what you can play. The material from Lesson Six on is all material you could realistically spend years getting on top of.

But do please do remember that these progressive versions are here for you to come back to whenever you feel you're ready - or just to try on the off-chance.

If you'd like to take up another Musicarta course as a follow-on, I'd recommend the Pyramids Variations, if you haven't already done it. It explores a chord sequence in the Basic Music-making Position with a fast-track build-up to a Concert Performance then a set of variations modelling all of the creative keyboard player's skills.
