The One-octave Major Scales
F and B - the 'Odd Men Out'
This series of four pages presents a practice drill for the twelve major scales, two hands over one octave.
The twelve keys/scales are divided on these pages as follows:
- '2H/SFG1': C and sharp keys to E (RH SFG1 + LH SFG2)
- '2H/SFG2': Flat keys B flat to D flat (RH SFG3 + LH SFG4)
- '2H/SFG3': 'Odd Men Out' F (RH 4+4/LH SFG2) and B (LH 4+4/RH SFG1)
- '2H/SFG4': B, D flat and F sharp (enh. G flat) - the 'All-Blacks' (both hands SFG5)

The 2H/SFG3 'Odd Men Out' scales
The F and B scales have this in common:
- One hand uses the 'ordinary' scale fingering (RH SFG1 or LH SFG2).
- The other hand divides the octave into two groups of four notes, played with fingers 1 to 4.
Look at the key-specific-keyboards below, and you will see that:
- In F, the RH plays 4 + 4 and the LH plays 5 + 3
- In B, the LH plays 4 + 4 and the RH plays 5 + 3
Bearing this in mind will help you remember the fingering and master the scales.
F major
One flat - B flat.
- RH: SFG 3 - thumb on C and on F.
- LH: SFG 2 - a group of three notes and a group of five.
Work up to a reliable performance by following the video below.
B major
B major. Five sharps: F sharp, C sharp, G sharp, D sharp and A sharp.
- A Group 5 scale (both hands); finger 2 & 3 on the group of two black keys, 2, 3 & 4 on the group of three black keys.
- White keys: B and E.
