  Rhythmic templates K to O

    Exercise HCV-K

Right hand pays HCV-C over left hand 'mixer' HCV-H.

Hands start together as if both playing HCV-C (revisit it), then the left hand lags behind a note, then catches up.

Preparatory steps demonstrated below if needed.

  Pattern build-up: HIJK

This video gives an overview of pattern H in the left hand combined with patterns A, B, and C in the right hand.

  Tapping drill

Here's some help tapping the syncopated pattern.

  Transferring the pattern

Here's an audio example of the HCV-K rhythmic template applied to Hanon Exercise No.11.

    Exercise HCV-L

The left hand is 'the sensible one' here - give it the leading role.

  Pattern build-up

A video showing how to practice the hands separately and together in a static five-finger position.

  Tapping drill

Here's some help tapping the syncopated pattern.

  Transferring the pattern

Here's an audio example of the HCV-L rhythmic template applied to Hanon Exercise No.12.

    Exercise HCV-M

Same comment as above: The right hand is the side dish, the left hand is the main course.

  Pattern build-up

A video showing how to practice the hands separately and together in a static five-finger position.

  Tapping drill

Here's some help tapping the syncopated pattern.

  Transferring the pattern

Here's an audio example of the HCV-M rhythmic template applied to Hanon Exercise No.18.

    Exercise HCV-N

Unison.

Notice this pattern is a regular long-short pair repeating, but across the beat.

Use the count to keep you in three - it's easy to slip into tuplets.

  Pattern build-up

A video showing how to practice the hands separately and together in a static five-finger position.

N is a unison pattern so there is no tapping drill.

  Transferring the pattern

Here's an audio example of the HCV-N rhythmic template applied to Hanon Exercise No.14.

    Exercise HCV-O

Unison.

Highly syncopated: only on the beat twice in the bar.

  Pattern build-up

Practice the hands separately and together in a static five-finger position.

O is another unison pattern so there is no tapping drill.

  Transferring the pattern

Here's an audio example of the HCV-O rhythmic template applied to Hanon Exercise No.16.
